Man's death in Niagara River was suicide
Authorities say they've determined that a man whose body was found floating in the Niagara River committed suicide.
Fishermen spotted the body late Sunday afternoon in the water off the Beaver Island State Park marina on Grand Island
State parks police say Monday that the man had left his car along the shoreline in Buffalo with a note inside. Authorities are withholding his identity, except to say he was from the nearby Town of Tonawanda.
Drunken driver strikes fully-loaded school bus
Two children suffered minor injuries when a car backing away from the Niagara Hotel parking lot hit a fully-loaded school bus on Friday.
Gerald R. Wohleben, 55, 6773 Rapids Road, was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated unlicensed operation and unsafe backing. Wohlben faces felony DWI charges based on a prior conviction on June 29, 2011.
A 9-year-old girl struck her head on seat in front of her and an 11-year-old boy suffered some pain from hitting his head on the window. According to the report, they declined treatment.
The bus had a driver and 48 passengers. All of their names were recorded by police.
The accident occurred near the intersection of North Transit Street and Niagara Street and Wohlben was backing out of the parking lot.
According to the report, police noted an odor of alcohol and Wohleben admitted to drinking at the Niagara Hotel. He failed all field sobriety tests. He registered a blood alcohol content in access of 0.18 percent. The time the accident occurred was not provided.
• SHOOTING: Police are investigating a shooting in the 3200 block of Ninth Street. A 29-year-old man told officers he was in his home at 3:58 a.m. playing PlayStation when "an individual kicked the the door in." The victim told police, "I got up to see what was going on and as I came around the corner I got shot in the chest." Officers said the victim suffered a nonlife-threatening gunshot wound.
