Lewiston driver's blood level more than 3 times legal limit

Niagara County Sheriff's deputies determined a Lewiston man's blood alcohol content to be 0.29 percent after a traffic stop on Friday.

Deputies reports they received calls of a possibly intoxicated man traveling to Willow Beach from the Town of Lewiston about 9 p.m. Friday.

A deputy and a state trooper located the suspect, identified as Thomas W. May, 58, 897 The Circle, Lewiston, driving north on Porter-Center Road with no headlights.

After stopping May, the deputy said May was slurring his speech very badly and showed other signs of intoxication. When asked to exit the car, the deputy said May was unable to stand up without assistance. He told deputies he was handicapped and unable to take field sobriety tests.

An Alco-Sensor determined the presence of alcohol and he was charged with DWI.

Inside the patrol car, the deputy asked May if he knew the alphabet and May responded, "Yes, I have six college degrees." He was unable to recite the alphabet when asked to star with the letter F.

Once at the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, May consented to a chemical test where his blood alcohol content was measured at 0.29 percent.

May was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated (BAC 0.18 or more), DWI, inadequate lights, no seat belt and unlicensed operation.
