Sheriff urges residents to check registry

Niagara Gazette — Of the 470 registered sex offenders in Niagara County, due to legislation, only 270 of the most serious offenders are on the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office website, the Sheriff’s Office said.

With the start of summer, Sheriff James R. Voutour suggested that Niagara County residents check the website to see where offenders live in proximity to residents. The website for the sheriff’s office is niagarasheriff.com.

Citizens can click on the red “Sex Offender Management” link on the website and follow the instructions to check their neighborhood and to sign up to receive email alerts. The website allows residents to register for the confidential email alert service through the Sheriff’s Office and Offender Watch, who will monitor addresses and keep residents up-to-date on newly registered offenders.

Once a resident has registered an address, the system will automatically alert them in real-time via email when a sex offender moves within quarter to a two mile radius of the registered home. Any of the addresses where a family spends time can be registered.

For further information or questions on Offender Watch, please call Deputy Joseph Flagler at 438-3314.
