Speeding motorcycle stopped near site of fatal Newfane crash

A speeding motorcyclist with a passenger was stopped and charged by a Niagara County Sheriff's deputy performing a periodic check of the site of Saturday night's double-fatal accident on Ridge Road, near Hess Road.

The deputy said he was in the area about 4 p.m. Sunday when he spotted the motorcycle with a female passenger traveling west on Ridge Road at an "extremely high rate of speed." The deputy said he was traveling in excess of 75 mph in a 40 mph zone.

The deputy said the motorcyclist, later identified as Joseph D. Lombardo, 22, 8677 Church St., Barker, rocketed through the curve at the scene of Saturday's accident at 75 mph.

The deputy then watched Lombardo turn onto Hess Road without signaling and then speed north on Hess, passing several vehicles in a no-passing zone without signaling.

Activating his emergency lights, the deputy said he caught up with Lombardo who was traveling in excess of 80 mph at this point.

Lombardo eventually pulled over and told the deputy he knew why he was being stopped and he was "being stupid."

When asked for a license, all Lombardo could produce was a learner's permit.

The deputy spoke with Lombardo's passenger, his 18-year-old girlfriend, who stated she had no problem with the way Lombardo was driving.

The young couple then got a lecture on Saturday's double-fatal accident — a result of traveling at high speed on Ridge Road — and the rash of recent fatal motorcycle accidents in the area.

The deputy did say that Lombardo apologized for the way he was driving. He was still charged with reckless driving, driving without a proper license, speeding and other traffic violations. The motorcycle was towed from the scene.
