U.S. marshals find meth lab in the Falls

Niagara Gazette — Federal marshals, on the hunt for a fugitive in the Falls, uncovered another meth lab in the city.

The marshals went to a residence in the 1900 block of Niagara Street Monday afternoon, looking for an unidentified male suspect. When they found their suspect they also discovered what investigators described as a small meth-making operation.

"It was a working lab," Falls Police Narcotics Capt. Dave LeGault said. "(The suspect) had actually produced some meth (on Monday)."

A spokesperson for the marshals could not be reached. LeGault said the suspect was taken into custody on the federal fugitive warrant, but no charges have been filed yet in connection with the lab operation.

Because meth labs use violatile and toxic chemicals, a special hazardous materials team will be called in to "clean up" the residence.

Police Superintendent Bryan DalPorto said the Hazmat team will not arrived in the Falls until later today, so local officers will be station outside the residence to secure the crime scene.

This is the seventh meth making operation to be uncovered in Niagara County in the last year. Three of those labs have been located in the Falls.

Others were found in the towns of Lockport and Niagara and the hamlet of Olcott.
