Man surrenders after standoff in town

A standoff ended peacefully Monday afternoon after a man threatened to harm himself with a knife in a Town of Tonawanda home, police said.

The 38-year-old man was in a house located at 32 Cloister Court when his wife called police at 11:30 a.m., Lt. Nick Bado said.

"It originated from a domestic incident," he said, noting that he was unsure whether the man was living in the home. "He probably did live there at some point, but there is an order of protection keeping him away from there right now."

The man and his wife are estranged and pursuing a divorce, Bado said, but the woman was not home when police reported to the scene.

A negotiator spoke with the man for several hours, and by 3 p.m., the man had surrendered to police.

The man, whose name is not yet being released, was taken to the town police station. Bado said charges would be levied against the man and that he will likely be sent for a mental evaluation.

Bado said there was no threat to the surrounding area.

"There was no indication he was a threat to anyone but himself," he said.
