Report of driver slumped over steering wheel leads to charges for Lockport man

A Lockport man is facing drunken driving and driving under the influence of drugs charges after being found passed out behind the wheel of his truck in Wheatfield on Saturday night.

Niagara County Sheriff's deputies were called to Lena Drive about 8:45 p.m. for a report of a man slumped over the steering wheel of his running truck. As they arrived, deputies said they spotted the truck, driven by Dennis W. Rohde, backing up and driving away. Rohde pulled into a nearby parking spot where deputies enacted a traffic stop.

Rohde denied being slumped over the steering wheel and said he was fine but appeared intoxicated to deputies. He failed several field sobriety tests and was taken into custody.

A search of his truck turned up a six-pack of Redd's Apple Ale in the cargo area behind the seats. Two of the bottles were open, one was empty the other was partially consumed.

Deputies also found a tin containing 32 pills identified as xanax. While at the sheriff's office, Rohde admitted to deputies that he had taken an indeterminate amount of xanax pills before driving. He was then brought to a nearby hospital for blood and urine tests.

Rohde, 39, 77 Hyde Park, Lockport, was charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, DWI, and operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.
