A 27-year-old man wanted on an arrest warrant for rape and sodomy was taken into custody at the Rainbow Bridge on Tuesday.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers said Abdinasir Abdi, 27, a citizen of Somalia and lawful permanent resident of the U.S., walked across the Rainbow Bridge Tuesday afternoon and tried to get into the U.S., claiming he lived in St. Louis.

Customs officers conducted background checks on Abdi and discovered an active arrest warrant from the St. Louis Police Department. Further investigation revealed that Abdi is also listed on the Toronto Police most wanted list for his U.S. warrant. The warrant states that Abdi is wanted for two counts of forcible rape and a sodomy charge.

Once Customs officers verified the warrant and confirmed extradition, Abdi was arrested and subsequently turned over to the custody of the Niagara Falls Police Department for extradition to St. Louis.

If convicted Abdi will be considered an aggravated felon and be placed into formal removal proceedings, possibly resulting in deportation back to Somalia.
