Falls man injured in Wheatfield industrial accident

Niagara County Sheriff's deputies were called to an East Inducon Drive facility about 10 p.m. Friday after a worker suffered burns to his face after chemical explosion.

The 44-year-old Falls man was attempting to neutralize hydrochloric acid with sodium hydroxide powder in a large vat. The deputies said it appeared the man was dumping the sodium hydroxide powder in the vat with the hydrochloric acid when the chemicals reacted. The reaction caused the chemicals to explode out of the vat.

The chemical's sprayed onto the man's face causing burns. It appeared the man was wearing a plastic wielding type face shield when the incident occurred, deputies noted. EMS personnel from Bergholz Fire and Tri Community ambulance responded to the scene and transported the man to Erie County Medical Center for his injuries.

A stated he would make all the necessary contacts regarding the incident including OSHA.
