Newfane man injured in crash after swerving to avoid animal

A 19-year-old Newfane man was flown by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center after an early Friday morning crash at Cambria-Wilson and German roads.

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office said an investigation revealed the driver was heading north on Cambria-Wilson Road when went off the west side of the road into a ditch, hit a culvert and his vehicle went airborne. It landed in the yard at 3848 Cambria-Wilson Road and overturned. The vehicle continued sliding until it came to a rest on its driver's side on the north side shoulder of German Road.

The driver told deputies he had swerved to avoid an animal in the roadway.

The driver was extricated from the vehicle by South WIlson and Wilson fire companies. He suffered head and arm injuries in the crash, according to the sheriff's office.
