Body found after apartment fire 

Police say a body has been found in a burned apartment after an early morning fire than caused an estimated $1 million in damage.

The fire broke out shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday at an eight-unit apartment building on Scamridge Curve, near the I-290 and Main Street intersection.

Police tell local media outlets that a body was found in the apartment where the fire started. Police haven't released information on the victim's identity or cause of the fire.

Amherst Police evacuated most of the residents after receiving 911 calls about the fire, and firefighters used ladders to rescue two upstairs residents and a cat.

Niagara Falls

• THEFT: Police are investigating a reported purse snatching at 5 p.m. Friday from a vehicle in the 300 block of Sixth Street. The victim, an 82-year-old Williamsville woman, told officers an unknown white male, about 5-foot-7 and 140 lbs, wearing a green jacket, approached her vehicle while she was inside and attempted to sell her winning lottery tickets. She said she was talking to the man when he reached into her vehicle and stole her purse and fled. She told police the purse contained a cell phone and $230 cash at the time.

Lockport

• CHARGED: Marcus Walton, 34, 6558 Lincoln Place, Apt. E, was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, first- and second-degree criminal contempt and second-degree burglary on Friday, according to state police. The charges stem from a Feb. 6 incident in which he entered a woman's apartment and dumped bleach on her clothes. The woman had a full stay-away order of protection against Walton. Police said he also sent several Facebook messages to the woman.
