Mother, daughters rescued from gorge by Canadian parks police

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. — A woman and her two 9-year-old daughters were rescued by Niagara Parks Police after straying from a trail in the Niagara Glen portion of the Niagara Gorge on Thursday.

Members of the Niagara Parks Police Service High Angle River Team responded to the Niagara Glen for the lost hikers about 2 p.m.

The woman said they had strayed off the marked trail system and were stranded at the top of a hill on loose rocks.

Police later rappelled into the gorge just north of Thompson’s Point and located the lost hikers on a steep portion of the gorge near the base of the headwall. The three hikers were uninjured and were later escorted out of the gorge on foot to the metal stair case at the Niagara Glen.

Safety is a shared responsibility and while hiking in the Niagara Gorge, patrons are reminded to:

• Stay on marked trails

• Wear suitable clothing and footwear

• Have in their possession a cellular phone

• Carry water and energy bars

• Avoid hiking in the dark

• Never hike alone

* Tell someone where they are going
