Cause of fatal Youngstown crash remains a mystery

Deputies rule out mechanical malfunction or medical condition in Youngstown accident

YOUNGSTOWN — Niagara County Sheriff's Department investigators say the cause of a fatal accident in the village of Youngstown on May 9 will probably remain "undetermined."

Investigators said Monday that results from an autopsy and toxicology testing on the body of Marlo G. Jackson failed to show any "medical conditions that could have led to the crash." Accident investigators had previously said they found no mechanical failures in Jackson's SUV.

Jackson, 30, of Lockport, was behind the wheel of a red Ford Explorer that ran a stop sign and plunged into the Niagara River.

The accident occurred just before 7 a.m. and witnesses said Jackson's SUV was traveling west on Church Street, when it failed to stop at a stop sign at Main Street. The SUV smashed through a guardrail and continued about 100 feet down an embankment before flipping over in relatively shallow water.

Sheriff’s deputies said when they arrived on the scene, they found Jackson “unresponsive” in the front seat of the SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A similar fatal crash happened at the same location in February 2008.

In that incident, a Lockport man was driving east on Church Street and went through the intersection at Main Street. Two men later discovered the car lodged up against a tree.

The body of Arnold Barnett was found a short time later, a small distance away from his vehicle.
