Sheriff's office investigating witness tampering in Lockport

A Wicks Road man contacted the Niagara County Sheriff's Office on Thursday to inform deputies that someone was trying to pay him to not testify in a robbery case.

The man said he was leaving work when he was approached by a man who handed him a note with a phone number on it. The man delivering the note said it would be in his best interest to call the number.

When the man called the number, a woman answered and told him was a relative of a man arrested in a July 20 armed robbery in Newfane. She offered the man $400 so he and his housemates would not show up to court to testify in the case.

The man told her he was going to cooperate with the court to his fullest extent and hung up. He then called the Niagara County Sheriff's Office. Investigators are looking in to the matter.

The armed robbery charge stems from a July 20 incident in Newfane in which a 23-year-old N. Main Street man was charged after pulling a knife on the host of a cookout that had broken up for the night.

The hostess handed over $400 and the man left with his girlfriend and 2-year-old child. They were later found by police in a Town of Lockport apartment filled with drugs, according to police.
