Falls youth caught after fleeing high school

A Niagara Falls youth was charged with trespassing at Lockport High School on Monday.

Principal Frank Movalli called Lockport police to the school to speak with Lawnique Johnson, 16, who he had escorted to his office from the school cafeteria. A teacher became concerned after spotting Johnson in the cafeteria and realizing he didn't look familiar, according to police.

Johnson ran from the principal's office when an officer approached and did not stop when ordered to do so. He fled through the Lincoln Avenue exit and was seen running through yards. An officer caught up with him on Pine Street, police said.

Johnson was arraigned in City Court on three charges: third-degree criminal trespassing, obstruction of a government official and resisting arrest.

Child struck by pickup

An 8-year-old boy was struck by a pickup truck at 4:30 p.m. Monday near the intersection of 16th Avenue and Gilmore.

Fire officials said the child was sent to Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo with injuries to his left elbow and leg, along with contusions. He was in stable condition. The driver was not charged in the incident.

Elderly woman helped from burning home

Emergency workers responded to an early morning fire Monday when a 93-year-old woman used her panic button to contact the authorities.

The woman, whose named was not released, met police officers at the front door of her home at 799 Lee Ave., North Tonawanda Fire Chief John Lapham said.

"The officers noticed all the smoke and called the fire department," he said.

The fire was believed to have started at 7:50 a.m. in a front bedroom, though an official cause of the blaze has yet to be identified. The fire was estimated to cause about $30,000 damage to the home, $10,000 of which was to the woman's belongings.
