Despite seven suspensions, Falls man charged with DWI again

Niagara Gazette — A Falls man whose driver’s license has been suspended seven times — twice for prior DWIs — was charged with DWI once again by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office early Saturday morning.

A sheriff’s captain responded about 2 a.m. Saturday to a gas station on the 6700 block of Williams Road for a report of an intoxicated man in the parking lot. A witness said they saw Dennis M. Crittenden, 39, 2810 McKoon Ave., drinking an alcoholic beverage in and around his car.

When the captain arrived, he found Crittenden asleep in his car with the keys in the ignition and the engine running. The captain also noted that the stereo was turned up to “an excessive degree.”

Crittenden was awoken and told to turn off the car and step outside.

At this point a deputy arrived and took over the investigation. The deputy said Crittenden appeared intoxicated and consented to field sobriety test — but refused to take any more after failing the first two tests.

A 750-ml bottle of tequila was also found next to the driver’s-side door.

He was eventually charged and replied “(Expletive) no,” when asked if he would submit to a chemical test.

A records check turned up seven suspensions on his driver's license dating back to 2002 for issues including two previous DWIs, two previous refusals to submit to a breath test and failure to pay child support.

Crittenden was charged with felony DWI, DWI, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, drinking alcohol in a vehicle and refusal of a breath test.
