Deputy extinguishes garage fire
A Niagara County Sheriff's deputy called to the scene of a garage fire at 6827 Sy Road used his patrol car's extinguisher to put out the blaze Friday morning.
When the deputy arrived he said he saw black smoke rising from the garage of the home. Prior to his arrival, a woman and her infant child were able to evacuate the home.
The deputy found the source of the fire — a stove inside the garage — used his extinguisher to put it out as well as stop the flames that had spread to an inside garage wall. Bergholz and St. Johnsburg fire company officials arrived and checked for any further issues.
The woman told the deputy she was heating up oil to cook chicken fingers, left the garage and forgot the oven was on. She later smelled smoke, say the flames in the garage and fled the home with her 1-year-old son while calling 911.
The estimated damage was $1,500.
