Hunter rescued from Iroquois Wildlife Refuge
Emergency personnel from four counties helped a hunter who became trapped in waist-deep water while roaming the backwoods of the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge on Sunday.
Rescuers were able to free him at about 6 p.m. after he had spent several hours in the water. He was treated for symptoms of hypothermia.
Crews from Erie, Niagara and Orleans counties joined rescue personnel from Genesee County in the rescue effort, which included a cold water rescue unit from Wolcottsville and a hovercraft from Clarence. A helicopter lifted the hunter and rescuers from the woods.
Woman, 19, dies in wrong-way crash
Police say a young woman has died and a man faces drunken driving and manslaughter charges after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 490 in Rochester.
Troopers say 19-year-old Khadijah McKenzie of Gates was heading west on the highway shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday when her SUV was struck by a pickup truck heading east in the westbound lanes without headlights on.
Police say 30-year-old Robert Rector of Fairport was treated for minor injuries and taken into custody. McKenzie was pronounced dead at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
• FIRE: Falls firefighters were called to a fire at 1157 Pierce Ave. about 4:30 a.m. Sunday. There were no reported injuries and the vacant home is scheduled to be demolished.
• THEFT: Police are investigating a reported theft from a vehicle between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. Saturday from a parking lot in the 6600 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard. The victim, a 46-year-old man, said he returned to his vehicle after working out at a gym to find the rear passenger side window smashed and a purse taken from the back seat. The value of the purse, its contents and the window was estimated at $358.
