Several businesses destroyed in Victoria Avenue fire, near Clifton Hill

Several business on Victoria Avenue, near the top of Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls, Ont., were destroyed by a fire early Wednesday morning.

Firefighters were initially called to 5815 Victoria Avenue about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday. The structure was in flames when firefighters arrived.

No injuries have been reported, according to the Niagara Falls, Ont., Review, but firefighters did battle with the extreme cold as well.

“There’s one main building, but it has four stores within it,” Niagara Falls Deputy Fire Chief Phil Ross told the Review. “It’s been a very cold night and it has hampered some of the efforts physically for our personnel. The cold has an effect on the body and we have also had some issues with our equipment freezing up, including some of the hose lines, nozzles as well as some of self-contained breathing apparatus that our personnel wear.”

A section of Victoria Ave. is expected to remain closed most of the day and residents are being encouraged to stay away from the location because there is considerable smoke still in the area.
