Niagara County Sheriff's deputies were called to a Lower Mountain Road home in Cambria about 4 a.m. Monday to pick up an unwanted assault rifle.

A 73-year-old woman told deputies she had owned the Romanian semi-automatic AK-47 rifle for 12 years and no longer wanted it in her home. She said she felt the safest way to get rid of it was to turn it in to police. A deputy noted the weapon had never been removed from its original packaging.

The woman also handed over two 30-round magazines for the rifle and six boxes containing 120 rounds of 7.62mm ammo.
