Woman walking in on intruder investigated in Wheatfield

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office is investigating a possible home invasion in Wheatfield Saturday afternoon.

A 22-year-old woman told sheriff's deputies she returned to her Witmer Road apartment from running errands about 2 p.m., put some items down in the kitchen and then went into the bathroom.

While in the bathroom, the woman said she believed she heard a door opening or closing followed by the sound of someone kicking some old blinds that were laying by the door.

After calling out and not receiving a response, the woman became frightened and called police from the bathroom, where she stayed till deputies arrived.

When the deputy arrived at the apartment, he couldn't get into the building and had to be let in by a downstairs neighbor who didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

The deputy searched the apartment but didn't find anyone and the woman checked to see if anything was missing or out of place. She said everything seemed fine.

Checking the door, the deputy found damage to the door frame by the door knob and wood shavings on the floor. A check of the main doors of the building found one of them to have been pried open.

The sheriff's criminal investigation unit is handling the matter.
