Man charged with sparking large grass fire in Lockport

TOWN OF LOCKPORT — An Appleton man was arrested following a large grass fire off of Crosby Road in the Town of Lockport Saturday afternoon.

Rapids Fire Chief Barry Kobran said his fire company first repsonded to the blaze about 3:30 p.m. but it quickly grew very large, requiring multiple fire agencies to respond. He said the fire burned about 3 acres of land.

Peter Johnson, 28, of Hess Road in Appleton, told Niagara County Sheriff's deputies he had intended to start a small bonfire with his family but the wind got hold of the flames and it quickly got out of control.

Johnson was charged with open burning.
