Two rescued from Niagara Gorge

A man and a woman were rescued from the Niagara Gorge Sunday morning after falling over the gorge wall on the Canadian side, across from the Niagara Parks Police building.

Niagara Parks Police said they received a 911 call about 7:20 a.m. regarding the pair falling over the wall. Members of the Niagara Falls, Ont., Fire Department rappelled over the retaining wall and rescued a woman from the top of the gorge headwall.

Emergency officials then ventured into the gorge below to find the man, who fell about 50 feet to the base of the headwall near a road to the Maid of the Mist. The 24-year-old man was taken from the gorge and transported to Hamilton General Hospital by air ambulance in serious condition with a suspected head injury.

The 20-year-old woman was taken to a local hospital where she was checked out and released.

The Niagara Falls, Ont., Review reports the couple may have climbed over the gorge wall to take a picture.

It is believed alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident and the events leading up to the fall are being investigated.
