Canadian man caught entering US by canoe

YOUNGSTOWN —

Border Patrol agents say they've arrested a Canadian man who paddled into the United States in a canoe.

The 38-year-old man is now in custody after being picked up early Thursday walking out of Fort Niagara State Park in Youngstown.

Authorities say the man admits stealing a canoe from a residence in Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario. Using a shovel for a paddle, they say he made his way across the lower Niagara River in the dark, a trip of less than a mile.

Agents on patrol found him on foot. A Border Patrol spokesman says the resident of British Columbia was planning to travel to New York City.

His name wasn't immediately released and a charge of illegal entry is pending.
