Lewiston teen charged with DWI after fleeing accident Saturday

Niagara Gazette — An 18-year-old Lewiston teen who was a passenger in a fatal one-car crash last year faces DWI and other charges after fleeing from the scene of a two-car accident in Lockport on Saturday morning.

Sheriff's deputies were called to the intersection of Hamm Road and Locust Street Extension in Lockport about 7:45 a.m. Saturday for reports of a car accident with injuries. When deputies arrived, they discovered one of the drivers, Jasmine A. Rickard, 18, of Lewiston, had left the scene. After searching the surrounding area, she was found at a Robinson Road convenience store.

An investigation determined Rickard was south on Locust Street Extension and failed to stop at a stop sign, striking another vehicle that was traveling east on Hamm Road. The 64-year-old driver of the second car hospitalized with minor injuries.

Rickard and two passengers in her car, an 18-year-old and a 20-year-old from Lewiston, were taken to Eastern Niagara Hospital-Lockport for treatment of minor injuries.

Rickard was charged with DWI, driving while ability impaired by the combination of drugs and alcohol, leaving the scene of an injury accident, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and running a stop sign. Deputies said, additionally, she was wanted on an outstanding bench warrant from Lewiston Town Court for a sentence violation.

Bail was set at $30,000 and she is due back in court in Lewiston on Wednesday and in Lockport on Thursday.

This past May, Rickard was flown by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medial Center after she was pulled from the wreckage of a one-car rollover on Walmore Road which took the life of 19-year-old Jasmin P. Dubuc of the Falls.

The driver in that crash, Taylor J. Clause, of Lewiston, was in Lewiston Town Court last month where a plea deal was struck down.

He is facing second-degree vehicular manslaughter and second-degree vehicular assault charges. A blood sample from Clause revealed her blood alcohol content to be twice the legal limit of 0.08, according to a state police press release.
