Niagara Falls police officer shot at while pursuing shooting suspect

Falls police are looking for a man who fired a gun at police while fleeing the scene of another shooting early Saturday morning in the North End.

About 3 a.m., Falls police received reports of a shots being fired between a green van and red car. A short time later, police responded to a car accident at Ninth Street and Ferry Avenue and found the green van involved in the reported shooting. A gunshot hole was found in the passenger side of the van. There were no reports of injuries related to the gunfire.

A short time later, the red car was located at 15th Street and Ferry Avenue. As police approached, the occupants fled from the car on foot. 

The driver was stopped and arrested. Rashaun M. Dix, 439 26th St., Apt. 1, was charged with traffic violations and fleeing from police.

While running, one of the occupants fired one shot from what appeared to be a long gun at a pursuing officer, according to police. The shot missed and the officer returned fire. Police said it is not believed the officer hit the suspect when he returned fire.

An extensive search of the area was conducted with the assistance of the Niagara County Sheriff's Office's K9 unit and the New York State Park Police. The suspect was not found. He's described as a 6-foot tall black man.

Falls detectives, the Crime Scene Unit, the Traffic Division and Office of Professional Standards are all actively investigating the incident.
