Anchor Motel in Wheatfield heavily damaged by fire

Tenants of a River Road motel were evacuated after an early Monday morning fire.

Niagara County Sheriff's deputies were called to the Anchor Motel, 2232 River Road about 12:50 a.m. for a report of smoke coming from the roof of the business. When they arrived, several deputies saw the roof of the motel on fire above several rooms.

Deputies went door-to-door checking all 19 rooms and helped the tenants of five rooms evacuate.

Multiple Niagara County fire companies responded to extinguish the large fire, including Frontier, St. Johnsburg, Adams, Bergholz, Niagara Active, Upper Mountain and the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. 

The motel sustained heavy damage and the Red Cross was called in to assist the tenants.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Niagara County Origin & Cause Unit.
