Ransomville woman charged with DWI had BAC more than three times the legal limit

A woman charged with DWI on Friday morning was driving with a BAC more than three times the legal limit, according to Niagara County Sheriff's deputies.

Responding a complaint of a drunken driver in the area of Youngstown-Lockport Road and Ransomville Road about 10:40 am., a deputy found Kathleen E. Champion in the parking lot of a donut shop. When the deputy pulled up with his patrol car's emergency lights on, Champion exited the car and appeared to be unsteady on her feet.

Champion said she hadn't had anything to drink but had taken prescription medication. She failed several field sobriety tests at which point she told the deputy she failed because she hadn't slept in several days and denied having anything to drink.

Taken into custody on suspicion of driving drunk, Champion was brought to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office where a breath test determined her blood alcohol content to be 0.29 percent, more than three times the 0.08 percent limit. She also consented to blood and urine tests which were administered at a Lockport hospital.

Champion, 52, 3388 Dickersonville Road, Ransomville, was charged with aggravated DWI (BAC more than 0.18 percent), DWI, and DWAI.
