Children showered with heroin during Tonawanda bust

Niagara Gazette — Two people were arrested Tuesday morning in connection with heroin sales during the execution of a search warrant by the Town of Tonawanda's special investigation unit and the SWAT team, according to police.

Indaleccio Rodriguez-Escalera, 22, of Buffalo and his girlfriend Melissa Rosario, 22, also of Buffalo, were arrested at the Economy Inn located at 40 Grand Island Boulevard in the Town of Tonawanda.

When the SWAT team entered the motel room to execute the warrant, Rodriguez-Escalera jumped out of bed and threw a handful of heroin around the room in an attempt to destroy evidence.

But the drug showered three small children in the room. The children are between the ages of 3 years and 3 months and due to the exposure to the narcotic, the children were sent to Children's Hospital for evaluation. The condition of the children was unavailable Wednesday.

Both Rodriguez-Escalera and Rosario were charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to sell, endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment.

The pair were arraigned in town court on the charges Tuesday night.

Rordiguez-Escalera is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail and Rosario was released to her parents. Both were due back in court for a felony hearing Wednesday afternoon.
