Falls police stage two raids

Niagara Gazette — Falls Police narcotics detectives hit a "pot house" and a flop house" in a pair of raids Wednesday night.

Just before 9 p.m., members of the Emergency Response Team crashed through the door of a home in the 2400 block of Grand Avenue. Investigators said their target was an active marijuana dealer.

"(Detectives) have been looking at this guy for a period of time," Narcotics Division Capt. Dave LeGault said. "We had numerous neighborhood complaints and there was constant traffic in and out of there."

After hitting the home, investigators said they recovered a quantity of pot and some prescription pills.

Michael McCarthy, 19, 2409 Grand Ave., was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.

A short time later, detectives and ERT officers were back in action at a duplex in the 400 block of 18th Street. The residence was directly across the street from an apartment building where investigators had found the remnants of a meth lab earlier in the day.

"Yeah, that probably affected the number of people we found there," LeGault said. "There were only two people inside and no drugs. It was a smoke house or a flop house you would call it."

The narcotics captain described the duplex as a major "neighborhood nuisance."

"It was a haven for drug activity, loitering and prostitution," LeGault said. "There were people coming and going from this place constantly. It was a place to go and do something illegal."

LeGault said the two people who were at the duplex will not face any charges. However, he said the residence was in "deplorable condition" and so city building inspectors were called in.

The inspectors condemned the house.

"This was a major concern for the block club and we wanted to address it as soon as we could," LeGault said.
