Woman, four children rescued from burning apartment building

Police helped a woman and four children jump to safety from the second floor of their burning apartment building Wednesday morning in Middleport.

The five people were trapped on the second floor as members of the Middleport police and volunteer firefighters and Niagara County Sheriff's Office arrived to the burning four-unit apartment shortly after 9 a.m.

deputy ran to the rear of the building and had the woman throw her four children out an open window where they were grabbed by the deputy and Middleport Police Chief John J. Swick.

All five got out of the structure without injury, Niagara County Sheriff James Voutour said.

The building, located at 143 Telegraph Road, is located across the street from FMC Middleport. Channel 2 is reporting the building is a total loss.

Middleport Police were still at the scene as of 1 p.m. Wednesday.
