Dogs left out in cold seized from Wheatfield home

The SPCA of Niagara took three dogs from a Jennifer Court home early Saturday morning after police received complaints they had been left outside for several hours in the frigid cold.

A Niagara County Sheriff's deputy arrived at the home about 12:45 a.m. and was told by a neighbor that three dogs had been barking outside for about an hour. The neighbor said he tried to contact the woman that lived there but she wouldn't answer the phone when he called. He said the lights in the house were then turned off and she left.

The deputy said he found the dogs shivering on a back porch covered with excessive amounts of dog feces. The temperature at the time was 14 degrees.

The deputy tried knocking at the door, with no answer and said it appeared the woman had left the home as there were tire tracks in the snow from the garage.

The SPCA was notified and the dogs were seized from the home about 2 a.m. The deputy noted that the total time the dogs were left out in the 14 degree weather was about 2 1/2 hours.

A follow-up investigation is being conducted and charges to the woman are probable, the deputy said.
