Best sentenced to 4 years, granted youthful offender status for role in Tennant murder case

LOCKPORT -- A Buffalo teen, accused of helping to dispose of the body of a murdered 5-year-old girl in Niagara Falls, could be eligible for parole as soon as he arrives at state prison.

Tyler Best, 19, was sentenced to 1 1/3 to 4 years in state prison Friday in Niagara County Court as part of his plea deal.

He admitted last month that he helped his friend, John Freeman Jr., get rid of the body of Isabella Tennant by hiding it in a garbage tote.

Best has already served 13 months behind bars and that calculated with time off for good behavior could conceivably make him eligible for parole as soon as he arrives at state prison, said Best's attorney, James Faso.

The judge Friday also granted Best youthful offender status in the case, due to the fact he was 18 at the time of the crime.

He pled to charges of first-degree hindering prosecution and tampering with physical evidence in early August. Best could have faced a maximum prison term of seven years for his conviction.

Look for much more on this story later this afternoon.
