Former fugitive will spend decade behind bars for assault on a child

LOCKPORT — A Falls man who went on the run during a sexual abuse investigation will now spend 10 years behind bars.

Niagara County Court Judge Sara Sheldon Farkas handed down the decade-long prison term, with 20 years of post release supervision, to Philips Edgardo Aguilar. Aguilar had previously pleaded guilty to a single count of first-degree criminal sex act.

A one-time resident of Whitney Avenue, Aguilar, 36, had admitted that he "engaged in oral sex with a child under the age of 13" in an incident in that occurred in 2011. Prosecutors said the abuse continued for two years before it was discovered.

Shortly after Falls police began investigating the incident, Aguilar fled the area. His time on the run ended in January when US marshals were able to track him down in the Long Island community of Uniondale.

He was originally charged with predatory sexual assault of child. The lesser charge he pleaded guilty to was part of a bargain with prosecutors to keep the victim from having to testify against Aguilar in open court.
