Ying's owner pleads not guilty to nuisance charge

Jimmy Ying, owner of Yings Wings and Things on Eggert Road, entered a plea of not guilty Monday in Tonawanda Town Court to a charge of criminal nuisance.

Ying was charged with criminal nuisance back on Nov. 17 following a shooting in the parking lot outside his restaurant in the early morning hours that injured one person. Police have yet to find the shooter and Ying was the only person charged in that incident.

The Nov. 17 charge was the fifth criminal nuisance charge Ying has faced since he began holding Saturday night college parties for patrons 18 and older on Sept. 14 at the restaurant.

Between 100 and 150 students attend the non-alcohol events, which are hosted by promoter 100 Entertainment. Ying said the vast majority of those who attended the events were African American and has claimed racial discrimination against the Town of Tonawanda Police Department.

He has since stopped holding the Saturday night college parties as a result of the shooting and charges.

Ying took his claims of racial discrimination to the Tonawanda Town Board on Nov. 18. Town of Tonawanda Police Chief Anthony Palumbo has denied any racism claims by his department.

During his court appearance Monday, Ying did not make any statements but entered his not guilty plea through his attorney to Judge Daniel T. Cavarello.

Ying is expected to return to court on Jan. 27 where his attorney will ask for a motion to dismiss all the charges against his client.
