Steve Richards pleads guilty to official misconduct

Former Town of Niagara Supervisor Steve Richards pleaded guilty to a single count of misconduct and was ordered to pay $1,240.37 restitution in front of State Supreme Court Justice Christopher Burns Monday morning at the Niagara County Courthouse.

Richards had been facing a 23-count indictment. He resigned from office on Friday — a stipulation of his plea agreement.

The count of official misconduct relates to an incident in which Richards used town employees to go to Cheektowaga to get a catch basin and bring it back to the auto shop he owns in the town.

Richards will also be sentenced to three years probation on July 14.

The former town supervisor said nothing during Monday's hearing. His attorney read a prepared statement. Several Town of Niagara officials and employees were in court for the hearing.

Check back on the Gazette website later today for more on the story.
