Niagara University to honor Father Levesque Saturday

The fourth-longest tenured president in Niagara University history and the second-largest hospital system in Western New York will be honored during Niagara University's President's Scholarship Dinner, set for Saturday at the Seneca Niagara Casino Hotel and Event Center.

Receiving the St. Vincent de Paul Award at this year's event will be the Rev. Joseph L. Levesque, C.M., president of Niagara University from 2000 to 2013, and Catholic Health. The award is conferred upon individuals "whose vision, accomplishments and good works reflect the life and ministry of St. Vincent de Paul."

Kelly G. Besaw, who recently completed an eight-year term as a member of Niagara University's Board of Advisors, and his wife, Kim, are serving as the dinner's chair couple. The Besaws received undergraduate degrees from Niagara University in 1983.

The purpose of the President's Scholarship Dinner is to generate funds for scholarship assistance for qualified Niagara University students. During the 2012-2013 academic year, 98 percent of undergraduate students received scholarship assistance from the university that totaled $36,383,681. During that same period, 449 undergraduates received endowed scholarships totaling $1,150,203.

The "black tie preferred" event begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails and includes the award presentations, dinner and music. All net proceeds from the evening benefit Niagara University's scholarship program.

Tickets for the President's Scholarship Dinner are $175 per person and may be reserved by contacting Niagara University's Center for Events and Management Development at 286-8705 or rcardone@niagara.edu. Tickets will not be available at the door.
