DG Bread & Pizza brings back memories of Trusello's -- and its customers

Niagara Gazette — What started as a search for a storefront for a business of their own turned into a whirlwind of public attention for Gail Zacher and her boyfriend.

They knew when they walked into the former Trusello's Bakery on Elmwood Avenue at 19th Street two years ago, they had their new home. It took those two years to get the place fixed up and ready to serve customers again.

But now that the building's bread ovens are firing on all cylinders, the customers who made the former bakery their early-morning stop are coming back in droves to support DG Bread & Pizza, a response much more wild than anything Zacher said she imagined.

"The public support has been phenomenal," Zacher said. "We've sold out every day. We appreciate everyone's support so much."

Sell out doesn't begin to describe the response to the building reopening. Zacher said lines form every morning since the first day of business the first week of May. Open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Sundays, the food's sometimes gone before the clock hits noon.

Most start-up businesses don't experience the immediate customer base she's seeing outside the door each morning. But most new store fronts don't have decades of history and a character-filled building to occupy which draws a crowd by itself.

"It's the building," Zacher said. "It came with the original bread oven and the original pizza oven. It came fully equipped. It just needed some tender loving care getting it opened. Even the door has its fans. I wanted to change the door out but people said they loved how the door slams the way it used to."

Zacher, though she offers many of the same food items Trusello's Bakery offered, said the business is unrelated to the popular bakery in any other way besides location. The recipes are their own. There's no affiliation to the family business which previously occupied the space.

She admitted the mixup may have driven business the first day or two.

"We have our own recipes that are very similar," she said. "A lot of people are thinking they're their recipes. But they're not. They're our own recipes. We're excited people like ours as much as they liked their's."

Still, the community and even the employees are excited to have an operating bread bakery in the former Trusello's location.

Mark Place, an employee under Zacher, said he enjoyed Trusello's bread and pizza when it still occupied the building. He said DG Bread & Pizza is a fitting substitute for the original inhabitants.

"It's good to have it back," he said. "Everyone's been wonderful coming in so far."
