History Center of Niagara unveils War of 1812 site map

Niagara Gazette — Are you a little cloudy on Niagara County’s role in the War of 1812?

The History Center of Niagara has unveiled a new map containing sites where the war raged locally 200 years ago.

Earlier this year, the History Center of Niagara received a $3,000 grant, from the New York State Council for the Humanities, to develop and implement interpretive programming concerning the War of 1812 in Niagara County.

The bicentennial of the war is being observed in the United States and Canada over the next few years.

The History Center’s project was a full-color map showing the location and information about 31 local War of 1812 sites.

According to Assistant Director Ann Marie Linnabery, there is at least one war site in almost every town in the county.

On the map, all sites are accompanied by a QR code that can be accessed with a smart phone for additional information, photographs and original maps for most locations.

Maps are available free of charge at the History Center, 215 Niagara St., Lockport. Due to its size and design, the map should be picked up there, Linnabery said.

The humanities grant also provided funding for the creation of a PowerPoint program highlighting the war sites. Schools, libraries, historical societies and other community groups can arrange a showing by calling Linnabery at 434-7433 or sending an e-mail to history11@verizon.net.
