Youngstown prepares for Labor Day festivities

Niagara Gazette — YOUNGSTOWN — Plans are being completed for the popular Labor Day Field Days set for Aug. 31 through Sept. 2 at Veterans Park in the village. The annual event that draws thousands of area residents to the village is sponsored by the Youngstown Volunteer Fire Co.

Field Days chairman Greg Quarantillo released the schedule over the weekend that includes for the first time pre-sale wristbands allowing children one-day access to all rides in the park. Vouchers will be sold in advance for $15 ($18 at the field site) at several businesses in Youngstown, Ransomville and Lewiston, The vouchers can be exchanged for the wristbands at the ticket booth at the field days.

Rides will operate opening day from 6 to 10 p.m. and Sept. 1 from 1 to 10 p.m.  Labor Day, the rides will run from 1 to 8 p.m.

The annual parade, a highlight of the three-day affair, will again start at noon from Fort Niagara State Park and proceed along Main Street to Elliott Street, ending at Veterans Park. Parade chairman Dave Truesdale said among the units expected to participate is the Protection Hose Co. of Thorold, Ont., a close-order drill team of volunteer firemen known for their shining silver helmets and long gray coats. “We’re hoping they’ll show up but, as they have indicated, it all depends on the flow of traffic at the border,” Truesdale said, alluding to the recent lengthy delays at the Rainbow and Lewiston-Queenston bridges.

A beer and wine bar will be operated Aug. 31 from 5 p.m. to midnight and Sept. 1 from 1 p.m. to midnight with a Happy Hour both days from 5  to 7 p.m. The bulk chowder will be available Labor Day, starting at 9 a.m. Volunteers interested in helping prepare the chowder are asked to contact Charmayne Pollow (998-3782)

In addition, Truesdale said any person or organization wishing to participate in the parade should contact him (745-7215) as soon as possible.
