Niagara PAL recognizes young artists

Niagara Gazette — The Niagara Police Athletic League honored more than 30 high school seniors from high schools across Niagara County and on Grand Island this weekend.

Niagara PAL's 5th annual Art Award Gala was held Sunday at the Castellani Art Museum at Niagara University in Lewiston. 

The event recognized students for their accomplishments in 2D visual arts, 3D visual arts, digital arts, theater, instrumental and vocal Music. Each school had a winner in each of the six categories with an overall winner from each group announced at the Art Award Gala. 

Each student submitted artwork to be adjudicated or did a live audition for judges from the music field. The submissions were considered on their originality and excellence. Each student’s work will be on display or segments of his or her audition will be aired at the Art Gala. 

The following students were honored in the following categories:


Visual Art 2D

HEATHER MASON, Barker High School – Mason is a member of AFS, foreign language club, Donate Life, Varsity Club and English club president. Heather plans on attending Nazareth College and will major in graphic design.

KARI ELLSWORTH, Grand Island High School – Ellsworth was the recipient of the President’s Education Award, State of New York Office of Attorney General Triple “C” award, the Character Council of Western New York Student of the Month and Academic Excellence awards. She is a Buffalo Art Studio member, an art club member of Grand Island High School, is involved with the Buffalo Art Studio jump start student mentorship program and takes art classes at Buffalo Art Studio and Niagara Community Education.  She will be attending Virginia Commonwealth University and will major in drawing/painting.

MEGAN ROGERS, Lewiston-Porter High School – Rogers' high school agenda included numerous classes in art such as AP 2D Art, AP drawing and painting, and drawing and painting studio art. She is a member of the Albright-Know Future Curators, the National Honor Society and a Chalk Walk participant.  She plans on attending Niagara University and will major in accounting.

JULIA PRISAZNUK, Lockport High School – Prisaznuk was the recipient of the Quality Student Award and Academic “L.” She is a member of Robotics, the Principal Advisory Cabinet, Foreign Exchange Club, SADD, Spanish Club, the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and National Society of High School Scholars.  She plans to attend Rochester Institute of Technology and will major in advertising.

NATALIE PARKER, Newfane High School – Parker placed second at the Erie Canal Art Competition and was the recipient of the Highest Average in Illustration award.  She plans to attend Malone University. Her major is undecided.

C. DOMINIC LIGAMMARI, Niagara Catholic High School – Ligammari has performed in Christmas concerts, variety shows and theater, including: "Annie;" "Once on this Island" and "High School Musical."  He is a member of the National Honor Society, is on the High Honor Roll and has achieved academic excellence in various subjects.  He plans to attend University at Buffalo/ITT Tech and will major in computer science.

SAMANTHA DOMAGALA, Niagara Falls High School – Domagala has taken two years of art classes that include Art 4 and AP Art Drawing and Painting. She has also played the flute for eight years in the pep band, marching band, symphonic band and concert band.  She is a member of the National Honor Society and German Club. She was accepted to the Medaille Honor Society and awarded their Presidential Scholarship which she will use to attend Medaille and will enroll in the pre-veterinarian program.

PAUL SPARACINO, North Tonawanda High School – Sparacino is a fine arts and architectural student at North Tonawanda High School. He has participated in Daemen All-High Art shows, New York State Summer School of Arts, Carnegie Art Center Student shows and was a mentor for elementary students at the Carnegie Art Center Family Night workshop.  He plans to attend NCCC and will major in fine arts, art education.

HANNAH WEISS, Starpoint High School – Weiss was awarded 1st place for district and regional for the PTA Reflection Program, had a state entry for visual arts and has academic awards for studio art, drawing and painting, advanced drawing and painting and digital photography. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Science Olympiad, Link Crew, varsity cross country and varsity track and field. Hannah was also awarded the AP Scholar Award with honors and the Starpoint Scholar Award. She plans to attend the University at Buffalo and will major in Chemical Engineering.

EMILY NOSKO, Wilson High School – Nosko has taken numerous classes in art to include: studio art; drawing and painting; ceramics and sculptures; illustration; advanced drawing and painting, and advanced ceramics and sculptures. She is a member of the National Honor Society (treasurer), Honor College at Brockport and SCVA at University at Buffalo. She has been class treasurer for three years and was the recipient of Merit Awards at the Wilson Free Library Art Show. She plans to attend SUNY Brockport and will major in Computer Science.


Visual Art 3D

• RYAN KELLER, Barker High School – Kellar has taken every available art class at Barker High School. He participated in his high school’s concert choir for three years and the school's 2013 play. He will be going into the Armed Services before attending college. He then plans on attending Alfred University and will major in art education a art history.

ANNA HUEBSCHMANN, Lewiston-Porter High School – Huebschmann's classes in art include: ceramics; sculpture; AP 3D and traditional photography. She was awarded Best in Ceramics for the District Art Show 2013, Best in Sculpture District Art Show 2014, as well as the Century Leader Award. She is a member of the National Honor Society (treasurer), the Art National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Ski Club (treasurer) and Art Club (co-president). She will major in Biology. Her college is undecided. 

KAYLEE NARKIEWICZ, Niagara Falls High School – This was Narkiewicz’s first year in visual art and working with clay. She took drawing and theater classes and is on the make-up team for “Every 15 Minutes,” which is a program designed to battle teens’ involvement with alcohol and drunk driving. She has been on the bowling team for four years where her team won state championship in 2012. She will attend NCCC and will major in animal management. 

ALYSSA SCHLOSSER, Wilson High School – Schlosser’s classes in art included: studio art; illustration; drawing and painting; ceramics and sculpture; advanced drawing and painting and advanced ceramics and sculpture. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Make-up Club for "Grease" and "Little Shop of Horrors," yearbook editor and senior class president.  She plans to attend NCCC and will major in liberal arts-humanities and social sciences.



MORGAN FEY, Barker High School – Fay sings bass in both the concert choir and men’s choir. He had the lead role of the school musicals playing Christopher Belling in "Curtains" and Vernon Hines in "Pajama Game."  Fay will be attending NCCC majoring in fine arts.

CONNOR CASO, Lewiston-Porter High School – Caso is a member of the Lew-Port senior choir (librarian), acapella choir, jazz choir, Lew-Port musical, Lew-Port art club, Lew-Port drama club (historian) and the National Art Honor Society. He has had many roles in theater productions with local theater and Lew-Port which include: "The Sound of Music" (Frederick); "Beauty and the Beast (Lumiere); "Suessical" (Horton, and Ensemble); "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" (Demetrius); "Alice in Wonderland" (Mad Hatter) and "Thoroughly Modern Millie" (Jimmy). He has also participated in all-county mixed choirs, area all-state mixed choirs, and conference all-state mixed choir.  Caso received Recognition of Musical Achievement and the Niagara University Presidential Scholarship where he will be attending majoring in psychology.

SHAUN JENKINS, Niagara Falls High School – Jenkins is the president of the drama club, a part of Men of Excellence, UNYTS donator, member of LYNC and anchor for High School Live. He spent four weeks in the summer at Delhi College for the New York State Summer School of Arts, was in three musicals and three, 24-hour plays.  He will be attending Pace University majoring in communications.

ALYSSA KRAMER, Starpoint High School – Kramer is a member of the drama club (president), musical club, the National Honor Society, Link Crew, and varsity tennis. She was the recipient of PTA Reflections 1st place for Film and State Merit, Mentor Award WNY Young Writers Studio and Scholar Athlete Award. Alyssa volunteers with Big Brother/Sister Program and the WNY Young Writers Studio. She will be attending Canisius College majoring in communications with a minor in theater arts.


Digital Art 

SARAH COSTELLO, Barker High School – Costello is a member of the concert choir, video club, foreign language club and English club. She has been in numerous theater productions at Barker Central School, Lockport Palace Theater and the Lake Plains Players.  She has been awarded the Provost Scholarship from SUNY Buffalo State where she will attend this fall to major in graphic design.

ADDISON JOSLYN, Grand Island High School – Joslyn is a member of the National Honor Society and has been the art club historian for four years. She has participated in the Grand Island Central School District art show, Grand Island Memorial Library art show and has made props and decorations for the art club haunted house.  She plans to major in graphic design. Her college is undecided.

JENNIFER KLING, Lewiston-Porter High School –  Kling has taken studio art, ceramics, digital photography, traditional photography, drawing and painting, sculpture, AP 3D Design and AP 2D Photo. In 2013, she was awarded Best of Traditional Photography at the district art show.  She is a member of the Art National Honor Society, Leadership Youth of Niagara County, art club (co-president), photo club (president), and senior class historian.  She will be attending Ashland University and will major in hospitality management.

JOSHUA KNEELAND, Newfane High School – Kneeland has taken drawing, studio art, sculpting, advertisement in art and computer graphics. He is a member of band (librarian), the National Honor Society, advisory board, varsity club, and varisty football, basketball and baseball. He will be attending Cedarville University and will major in graphic design.

JOY HUANG, Niagara Falls High School – Huang is a clarinet player in the concert and marching bands and a piano player for the jazz band. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Masterminds, Donate Life Club and foreign language club.  She is class Valedictorian and will be attending the University of Pittsburgh on a full tuition scholarship majoring in biomedical engineering.

MEGAN HELD, Starpoint High School – Held has taken digital photography, advanced digital photography and plays clarinet in the band. She is a member of the musical club (treasurer), band (secretary), Donate Life (treasurer), Diocesan Youth Board, Parish Youth Group Leader, field hockey and track.  She is a recipient of “Do the Right Thing” (2013), Gilbride Award (2011), and Altar Server of the Year Award (2013).  She will be attending Niagara University on an economic grant and academic scholarship majoring in hospitality and hotel management.



LEAH PERKINS, Barker High School – Perkins plays the trombone for the jazz band, concert band and musical productions at school. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Donate Life Club, varsity soccer (treasurer), varsity swim team (treasurer) and has also been awarded the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award. Leah will be attending Biola University studying interdisciplinary education and intercultural studies.

JACOB PAYNE, Lewiston-Porter High School – Payne has made all-county symphonic band 2013, area all-state symphony orchestra 2012, area all-state symphonic band 2013, and conference all-State symphonic band 2013. He has won the MacKenzie Highlanders’ Pipe Band 2014 Scholarship, Niagara County Educators’ Association 2014 scholarship and the Daria Kuriscak Memorial scholarship. Jacob is snare drummer in MacKenzie Highlander’s Pipe Band and has a second degree black belt in Karate. He will be attending SUNY Fredonia majoring in music performance in percussion.

CHRISTOPHER DOBMEIER, Niagara Falls High School – Dobmeier had performed in "Willy Wonka" 2013, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" 2014, concert band, pep band (captain), symphonic band (student treasurer), jazz band, and marching band. He has won the George Eastman Music Award, All-WNY Good Sports Team Award, Award of Excellence and Scholar Athlete. Christopher is a member of the Leadership Youth of Niagara Communities, Scholastic Bowl, UNYTS, German club (student treasurer), cross county (captain) and a class officer.  He will be attending the University at Buffalo majoring in Spanish and international studies.

JOSEPH FRAZIER, Royalton-Hartland High School – Frazier is musical council president and a member of the drama club, Envirothon, student council, honor roll and music honors. He participated in the pit orchestra for the Lake Plains Players performance of "Sweeney Todd," the Royalton Hartland High School performances of "South Pacific" and "The Wizard of Oz," NCMEA Festival 2012, 2013, 2014, Rochester Tuba Christmas 2013 and he also had the lead role for Roy-Hart’s performance of "Footloose." He will be attending NCCC majoring in criminal justice.

LIVIA CHASE, Starpoint High School – Chase is a member of the National Honor Society, pit band, wind ensemble, class officer (secretary), foreign language club, math honor society (Secretary), Link Leader, science honor society, varsity cross country (captain) and varsity track (captain). She participated in the NCMEA All-County Band for Flute 2011, 2012, 2014, NCMEA All-County Orchestra for Violin 2011-2014, NYSSMA Area All-State Orchestra on Violin November 2012, 2013.  She was the recipient of the Superintendent’s Award, Clarkson University High School Achievement Award and Wendy’s High School Heisman State Finalist. She will be attending Canisus College majoring in biochemistry.



NICK MACE, Barker High School – Mace is the president and co-founder of Barker A Cappella Group, a member of the men’s choir, the school musicals and the Lake Plains Players Community Theatre. He has participated in concert choir, area all-state chorus 2012 and 2013, and all-county choir 2012 and 2013.  He has also performed in two school musicals, "Curtains" (Oscar Shapiro), and the lead in "The Pajama Game" (Sid Sorokin), as well as two with the Lake Plains Players, "Les Miserables" (ensemble) and "Sweeney Todd" (ensemble, soloist). He also performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and chorus for the holiday pops concert.  He will be attending Buffalo State University and will major in vocal performance.

MAGDALYN CHAUBY, Grand Island High School – Chauby plays alto saxophone in the wind ensemble and jazz band. She is a soprano/alto in Woman of Note and Soprano 1 in the Madrigals, concert choir. She participated as a Soprano 1 in the conference all-state women’s chorus and area all-state Zone 1 mixed chorus, as well as the musicals for four years.  She is a member of the National Honor Society and has been awarded AFAF’s Golden Voices of America Recital at Carnage Hall, Soloist and Town Declaration for Performing at Carnage Hall. She will be majoring in vocal performance. Her college is undecided.

ALEXANDER McARTHUR, Lewiston-Porter High School – McArthur is a member of the drama club, Spanish National Honor Society, Spanish club and jazz choir. She has participated as an Alto 2 in Zone 1 area all-state women’s choir and the Niagara County All-County Senior High Chorus as well as school musicals, "Alice in Wonderland" (Queen of Hearts) and "Thoroughly Modern Millie" (Muzzy Van Hossmere) to name two.  She will be attending University at Buffalo with a major in music theatre.

CAITLIN NUZUM, Niagara Falls High School – Nuzum is a member of the all-county, area all-state and the Buffalo Philharmonic chorus. She will be attending NCCC and will major in culinary.

BENJAMIN R. CHATEY, Starpoint High School – Chatey is a member of the National Honor Society, varsity swimming (captain), Donate Life Club, select concert choir, NYS School Music Association Conference all-state choir, varsity volleyball and Boy Scouts of American Eagle Scout. He will be attending the College of Brockport and will major in adolescent history education.

CAITLIN BOYLE, Wilson High School – Boyle has performed with the all-county chorus, all-county band, area all-state chorus, conference all-state chorus, American High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall Chorus, show choir, women’s choir, ensemble choir, concert band and jazz band; as well as the Buffalo Philharmonic Choir, and in musicals as a performer and director.  She is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council President, Scholastic Bowl Team (captain) and SADD. She is also a recipient of Outstanding Achievement in Band, Theresa Fitzsimmons Memorial Award and the New York State Merit Award. She will be attending Binghamton University and will major in history with a minor in music.
