Lew-Port hosting Homerun for Hospice

Niagara Gazette — Four area schools have teamed up to raise money for Niagara Hospice in the Homerun for Hospice Tournament to be held April 9 and 10.

Varsity and Junior Varsity baseball teams from Lewiston-Porter, Wilson, Depew, and Starpoint will compete on the field as well as raise money for Hospice. Before battling it out on the field, players will compete to sell the most sponsorship baseball cut-outs with their school logo for $1 each.

Mark Waple, Lew-Port teacher and varsity baseball coach, created the event as a way for students to give back to the community.

“It’s important for our kids to work together to give back to the community,” he said. “It’s good for them to see that they can really make a difference.”

Lew-Port will host the varsity games with Lew-Port vs. Depew and Starpoint vs. Wilson at 4:45 pm on April 9. The winners of each game will play a championship game at 4:45 p.m. on April 10 while the remaining teams will play a consolation game. The junior varsity games will be held at Wilson with the same teams playing following the same schedule.

Spectators are encouraged to come out and cheer the teams on. Concessions and additional sponsorship baseball cut-outs will be sold throughout the event with all proceeds benefiting Niagara Hospice.

Volunteers and sponsors are still needed for the event. For information, call Maureen Rizzo at the Niagara Hospice Alliance at 280-0728.
