U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer is supporting officials at the Buffalo Zoo who want to keep an orphaned polar bear cub there at least until he turns 2.
The 10-month-old cub named Kali was brought to Buffalo last May after a hunter killed his mother in Alaska.
Federal wildlife officials may want to send Kali to another zoo.
But Buffalo Zoo President Donna Fernandes said Kali should not be moved yet.
That's partly because Kali has a friend in Buffalo — Luna, a female polar bear just one month older than he is.
Fernandes enlisted Schumer to call wildlife officials on the zoo's behalf.
The New York Democrat said the best thing for Kali would be to keep him in Buffalo.
