Labor council holds annual Ransomville Speedway fundraiser

Niagara Gazette — Labor’s Night at the Races, a major fundraiser hosted by the AFL/CIO Niagara/Orleans Central Council to benefit the United Way of Greater Niagara is all set for Friday.

“This is an awesome event” commented Marketing Director Tana Robinson, a spokesperson for the speedway. “The Labor Council does a fantastic job organizing the event.”

In the past four years the event has raised $32,000, and planners credit the sponsors for their support, including the AFL/CIO Niagara/Orleans Central Labor Council, the Friesen Family and the Ransomville Speedway.

Tickets are $15 general admission and $7 for children under 12. They can be purchased at the United Way of Greater Niagara, 6420 Inducon Dr., Suite B2, Sanborn; by calling Bill Jakobi at 216-4582 or on the website, www.laborsrace.com. Tickets can also be purchased at the novelty booth at Ransomville Speedway.

“This event is so unique in the sense that the union members purchase tickets and then donate them right back to our organization so clients from our funded programs can attend,” said Carol Houwaart-Diez, executive director of the United Way of Niagara. “We have children from the Niagara Falls Boys & Girls Club, and we have clients from Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara and Niagara Cerebral Palsy who attend and enjoy the fast dirt track racing. It is something that members of organized labor can be so proud of for being a part of.”

The rain date for the event is June 21.
