Ice rink is site of Lewiston's New Year's Eve bashes

Niagara Gazette — There won't be a special guitar descending from the side of a building or a televised concert raging on the streets, but a pair of celebrations will help kick off 2014 properly in Lewiston.

Both adults and children will have an opportunity to usher in the new year with their own celebrations once again this year, a tradition in the village made possible by several sponsors.

What's changed this year is the sheer magnitude of the planned extravaganza, according to recreation department Director Michael Dashineau.

"This year, we'll drop 1,200 balloons from the ceiling (of the ice rink tent in Academy Park)," he said. "Normally we drop 100 or 200, but there's so many people there, sometimes kids didn't even get to touch a balloon. So we contracted out and will have more balloons this year."

The children's party kicks off at 6 p.m. inside the tent to the town's ice rink in the village park. It leads up to the balloon drop at 8 p.m., a much more kid-friendly time than midnight. They'll shoot confetti from blasters as well, adding to the party atmosphere.

And because it'll be indoors, weather won't play much of a factor in the town's plans, though the ice rink is scheduled to be open throughout the night allowing folks to take to the ice if they so choose.

Shelter from the elements may be necessary, as the National Weather Service predicted low temperatures to fall near the 10 degree mark in with winds gusting as much as 20 mph as of Monday evening.

So, if they choose, the adults attending the second Lewiston party will have access to their own tent to stay warm. When the ball drops on midnight and 2014 is upon the world, the warming tent on Portage Road may be filled with people again this year.
