Niagara Gazette — From scrambling to find a date, to practicing dance moves, to searching endlessly for the perfect dress, high schoolers from all over the region are preparing for one of the most memorable nights of their lives — prom night.
Unfortunately, prom night can be a costly affair. A tuxedo rental for one night alone can cost over $100, with some prom dresses likely costing triple that number. For families who don’t have much disposable income, just the thought of missing out can be heartbreaking.
However, members of Leadership for the Youth of Niagara County, or LYNC for short, are doing what they can to help those in need. The group has teamed up with Community Missions of the Niagara Frontier to collect donations of both men’s and women’s prom attire.
“Every year, the LYNC class does a project. They’re given a topic, which this year is local poverty,” explained Tasha LeFevre, a mentor with the LYNC program. She explained that Leadership Niagara provides not only leadership skills, but also stresses the importance of giving back to their community. “Because we’re getting into prom season, this idea was kind of fresh in their minds,” she said.
“I really like that they (the students) have compassion for those who are less fortunate,” said LeFevre. “It shows them that people do struggle and certain things like going to prom isn’t always an option for them or their family to afford.”
The group is accepting all types and sizes of prom wear, including dresses, suits, shirts, ties, and pantyhose. They are also taking donations of personal hygiene items such as soap, deodorant, and toothbrushes. All donations will be accepted through Community Missions. A special giveaway event will take placeon May 18 at the Kiernan Center at Niagara University. All the prom attire that remains afterwards will be sent to the Community Missions where it will continue to be distributed to those who need something to wear.
