HIGGS: Family business continues as does the NBC

Niagara Gazette — The Niagara Beautification Commission has been busy lately. The organization meets monthly to discuss problem areas in the city where it can help current beautification projects under way, Spotlight Award activity and coming events.

The latest Spotlight Award was presented to the Moonlite Motel at 7811 Niagara Falls Blvd. on Aug. 19. Current owners Eddie and Marlena Mazzei greeted me in their reception area and introduced me to Marlena’s mother and former owner Laila George-Nader. Laila told me she was the owner for 25 years and would only sell to her family who were very familiar with the operation as they worked with her over the years. Eddie and Marlena took over the day-to-day duties at the start of the 2012 season. I also met their young daughter who I called “the future owner.” This is truly a family business. The family lives on premises as it is a 24-hour business and is only closed from December through March when they all recharge their batteries.

There are 21 rooms which include some non-smoking and family units as that is a good part of their business. Lodging includes free WIFI, Cable TV, a beautiful outdoor swimming pool (which their daughter enjoys daily) and a complimentary seasonal continental breakfast. You can also bring your own — there are refrigerators and microwaves in the rooms. I asked about the shuttle to the Falls and casino and they said it is free and they are on the trolley stop. There are plenty of great places to eat nearby such as one of our former’s Spotlight winners, Buzzy’s and Sophie’s Pita Place.

They recently completed a big landscape effort with beautiful flowers and they did keep Laila’s roses which have bloomed for as long as she was the owner.

While driving along the Boulevard, slow down and smell the roses. Better yet — book a room and enjoy the pool.

Coming up on Sept. 12 is the NBC Annual Awards Luncheon honoring all our “Partners in Projects and Progress” this year. Anyone who is anyone in Niagara Falls has assisted our organization in some way with many involved in the annual Beautify Niagara citywide clean up campaign. It should be fun to get all these nice people in the same room and say “thank you for helping us keep Niagara beautiful.”

You too can be one of them by making your reservation now. Simply call 285-5030 and leave your phone number or email address.

What’s in store for you? Well for one thing — a nice lunch at Conference Center Niagara Falls beginning with a reception at 11:30 a.m. where you register your prepaid admission and meet and greet our award winners and your friends.

Recognition is going to Covanta Niagara LP, DiCamillo’s Baking Company, Downtown Niagara Falls Business Association, Niagara Falls Bridge Commission, Niagara Falls Fire Department, Memorial Medical Center, Niagara River Lodge No. 785 F. & A. M., Niagara Tourism & Convention Corporation, the Gazette, Modern Corp., Olin Corp., Piccirillo Florist, Sam’s Club, Tops Friendly Markets, Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel, WTS, Inc., Niagara Falls Boys & Girls Club, Marge Gillies, Robert Brawn and Joseph Hotchkiss.

Nice words will be said about them all in rhyme — if I get my act together in time (hey — I just did it!) and they will be presented with something to take back and display in a prominent place we hope. We promise to get all this accomplished by 1:30 p.m.

Send a check payable to NBC for each prepaid ticket ($20 each, please) and give us the names of those attending to Niagara Beautification Commission, PO Box 1945, Niagara Falls, New York 14302.

We lost a large share of our funding this year but a little bit goes a long way at the NBC and we can stretch that $20 into something big for our city. Be part of it. Be a “Partner in Projects & Progress.”
