Niagara Gazette — While the current state legislative session was winding down it was apparent that no earth-shattering goals would be accomplished in the 11th hour.
Even worse, with an election approaching, the political experts are generally agreed that Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, a Democrat, will have little or no difficulty in winning another four-year term. The odds are staggering that Rob Astorino, the Westchester County executive and GOP candidate, has virtually no chance of defeating the incumbent.
A recent Siena Poll revealed that, even if the lawmakers took off for the summer without wrapping up some important business, Cuomo should have no fear that his re-election campaign would be derailed. Steve Greenberg, a spokesman for the Siena findings, confirmed that the poll lists Cuomo 36 points in front of Astorino.
If votes in the Legislature fall short of the mark — Greenberg explains — the governor can simply place the blame squarely on the lawmakers. And, of course, that provides the state Chief Executive with a fistful of issues that he can use to beat back the criticism during the fall campaign.
MAKING WAVES: The fledgling Niagara Jet Adventures, the new jet boat ride along the Niagara River, between Youngstown and the Whirlpool, has recently released a colorful promotional piece now featured in brochure racks at downtown hotels, some restaurants and at the information centers. Co-owner Mike Fox says people can reserve seats on line at niagarajet.com or call 855-NJA-TOURS (652-8687).
RINGS A BELL: If that Park Place Market, 630-640 Park Place, across from the Main Post Office, attains a fraction of the success and popularity of the famous Pike Place Market in Seattle, it should be another reason for visitors to stay a little longer. The market here will offer fresh produce, local delicacies, plantings, artisans’ works and a variety of speciality items. People interested in the project may contact Tom Lowe (696-0110) who has been active in efforts to help revitalize the downtown area and make it more tourist friendly.
