BILLS NOTEBOOK: Hardy misses practice with hamstring injury

PITTSFORD — James Hardy was dressed and ready to go Thursday night, but never got the call. The rookie wide receiver from Indiana watched as the Buffalo Bills practiced under the lights for the second time during training camp at St. John Fisher College.

“When we were warming up I sort of tweaked my left hamstring a little bit, nothing major,” Hardy said. “After talking with the trainer, he said it was better that I just sit out so I wouldn’t pull it and be out two to three weeks.”

Bills coach Dick Jauron said Hardy had some tightness in his hamstring before the team took the practice field.

“They (the trainers) didn’t want to take any chances,” Jauron said. “Hopefully, that won’t be too long, but you never know.”

Not in attendance Thursday was starting safety Ko Simpson, who was taken to have an MRI on his surgically-repaired left ankle. Simpson left Tuesday’s practice because of trouble with the ankle, but worked out Wednesday.

“We had it tested ... so we could put his mind at ease and our own about it,” Jauron said. “We think we’ve eliminated any real serious stuff, so now we just work through the soreness.”

Jauron said he hadn’t noticed any tentativeness from Simpson, but wouldn’t find it unusual in a player returning from his type of injury.”

Strong safety Donte Whitner left Thursday night’s practice after getting sick on the field.

“He thought it had passed, but he got sick again,” Jauron said of Whitner. “He felt really bad, so towards the end they (trainers) just took him off the field.”

The Bills were paid their annual visit by NFL officials, who worked Thursday’s session and will address the media today, answering questions pertaining to rules changes and points of emphasis for the upcoming season.
