HIGHER EDUCATION NU students show off in capital

Ten students in Niagara University’s College of Arts and Sciences were among 70 student research teams from 27 campuses selected to participate in a research exposition in Albany this past week.

The students displayed research posters Tuesday at the Legislative Office Building in the state capital as part of a one-day event bringing together college students, faculty and New York state legislators.

The event showcased the quality of undergraduate research being undertaken by independent colleges and universities throughout the state.

The students representing Niagara University included senior biology major Christopher Greene of Niagara Falls, and junior biochemistry majors Megan Gombert of Youngstown. Their research was performed with Robert Greene, chair of the biology department; Deborah Leonard, senior scientist and research laboratory technician; and Michael Merhige of Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, through the university’s Academic Center for Integrated Sciences and funded by the New York state GenNYsis program.

Also in attendance at the conference was Jeffrey St. Denis of Niagara Falls, a senior majoring in biology and chemistry, and Mallory van Dongen of Lewiston, a junior chemistry major who studied the development of new antibiotics which could be used to preserve food and to coat surfaces to prevent the spread of germs. Their research, performed with Ronny Priefer, assistant professor of chemistry, was also done through the university’s academic center.
